Understanding cannabinoids can feel complex at first. Two of the most commonly discussed compounds found in hemp are CBD (cannabidiol) and CBG (cannabigerol).

Non-intoxicating
While both are non-intoxicating and derived from the hemp plant, they interact with the body in different ways and are often used in different types of formulations.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of the most abundant and widely recognized cannabinoids found in hemp. It is non-intoxicating and commonly used in a variety of hemp-derived products.
CBD has been studied for its interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors and signaling pathways involved in maintaining internal balance.
Unlike some cannabinoids, CBD has a low binding affinity for CB1 and CB2 receptors and is often described as working more indirectly within the ECS by influencing how these receptors respond.
In addition to its interaction with the ECS, CBD has also been studied for its activity across other receptor systems in the body, including pathways related to sensory and signaling processes, although research in these areas is still evolving.
Because of both its natural abundance in hemp and its widespread recognition, CBD is often the starting point for individuals exploring hemp-derived products.
CBG, or cannabigerol, is often referred to as a “parent cannabinoid” (sometimes called the “mother cannabinoid”) because it serves as a precursor in the early development of other cannabinoids found in the hemp plant.
Like CBD, CBG is non-intoxicating. However, it has been studied for its interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system in different ways.
Early research suggests that CBG may interact more directly with CB1 and CB2 receptors within the endocannabinoid system, although research in this area is still evolving.
CBG is typically found in smaller amounts in mature hemp plants, which is why it is often formulated using isolated or concentrated forms.
How CBD and CBG Relate to the ECS

CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) through a variety of signaling pathways rather than binding strongly to cannabinoid receptors the way THC does. CBG (Cannabigerol)
CBG is often referred to as the “mother cannabinoid” because many cannabinoids begin as CBGA, a precursor compound produced by the plant early in its development.
As the cannabis plant matures, CBGA is converted by natural plant enzymes into other cannabinoids, including CBD and THC. Because of this conversion process, only small amounts of CBG typically remain in mature hemp plants.

CBN (Cannabinol)
CBN is a cannabinoid that forms when THC gradually oxidizes through exposure to oxygen and light.
Because of this process, CBN typically occurs in very small concentrations in the living hemp plant, making it one of the rarer cannabinoids naturally present.
Producing products with meaningful levels of CBN often requires additional refinement, aging, or conversion processes, which can make CBN formulations more complex and sometimes more costly to produce.

Endocannabinoid System (ECS)
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a biological signaling network found throughout the human body that helps regulate and maintain homeostasis, or internal balance.
The ECS is composed of three primary components:
- Endocannabinoids
- Cannabinoid receptors
- Metabolic enzymes

Endocannabinoids
Endocannabinoids are naturally produced signaling molecules created by the body that interact with cannabinoid receptors as part of normal ECS function.

5) Cannabinoid Receptors
CB1 Receptors
CB1 receptors are found primarily in the brain and central nervous system.

THC binds strongly to CB1 receptors, which produces intoxicating effects.
