What is the difference between “hemp” and “marijuana”?

Under U.S. federal law, hemp and marijuana are both varieties of Cannabis sativa L., but they are distinguished by THC content. Hemp is defined as cannabis containing no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis, while marijuana refers to cannabis that contains more than 0.3% delta-9 THC.
